Iron Stains On Sink or Clothing

Iron stains on the sink or clothing are very frustrating.

Most people wonder how you get rust stains on clothes or a sink when there is no exposed metal on the sink to rust, or in the washing machine that would rust. Rust stains usually show themselves around the drain or near the faucet in a dirty brown, red, orange or yellowish color that makes the bathroom or kitchen look dirty and stains clothing. Most rust stains are actually not from something you left in the sink or the sink itself rusting or even the washing machine, the rust is from your water!! People who live in an area where the iron content in the water is high, often experience this problem. Scrubbing the stains with soap and water usually does little to remove them. Scouring powders and steel wool will scratch the sink. • Cut a fresh lemon and squeeze the juice or measure 1 to 2 tablespoons of concentrated lemon juice. Pour or squeeze the lemon juice over the unsightly rust stains. Sprinkle a thick layer of salt over the lemon juice and rust stains. Let the salt covering remain on the surface of the sink for eight to 10 hours without disturbing it or running water. Pour lemon juice and add salt before going to sleep at night or before going out for the day. Wet an old toothbrush with lemon juice and scrub the crusted salt off the surface of the sink. The rust stains will be gone! Rinse the sink thoroughly with plain water and wipe it dry with a rag or paper towel.
• Products like CLR and Lime-Away are also very effective at removing rust stains. Just be sure to read the instructions carefully to be sure they are safe to use in your specific “rust” situation.
